Welcome Goblin Children – to my very first instructional video as past of Lulu Art Design Team.
Watch me conjure a Creepy Pumpkin Head Creature using a variety of mixed media techniques, just in time for Halloween.
This Spooky Pumpkin Head Creature is filled with uncanny candy and paranormal punch as she hop, skips and jumps her way to a Haunted Halloween Hootenanny.

Hello, it’s Robyn joining you today to share a colourful art journal page. For this project I used the new Ranger Dylusions Acrylic Paints and I have to say I am crazy about their vibrant colours and great coverage. I found that the paints brushed on very smoothly and dried quickly to a lovely matt finish – perfect for stamping, stencilling, drawing or painting over the top. The colours are easily blendable if you happen to need a slightly different shade or colour, I created the purple from Vibrant Turquoise and Bubblegum Pink.
I hope you enjoyed learning how this project comes together. Don’t forget to pop by Lulu Art & Friends Facebook page to say hi, share your project or leave a comment on my blog,www.purplesalt.net
Hi, it’s Robyn with you today sharing a sweet little canvas featuring the use of Faber-Castell Gelatos and a new product, Whipped Spackle.
Whipped Spackle is quite an innovative product – you would think it was ordinary light modelling paste but it is actually gesso that has been aerated in a mixer to create a lovely texture similar to icing. The aeration gives the product an amazing lightness and it will be perfect to use on canvasses but particularly cards, scrapbook layouts and art journals when you want texture without the usual heaviness.
Floral paper napkin with unprinted layers removed.
Thanks for joining me today! I hope you will create your own beautiful butterfly canvas – I’d love to see it if you do. Don’t forget you can upload pictures of your projects to our LuLu Art & Friends Facebook page or leave a comment on my blog, www.purplesalt.net. If you use Instagram you can find LuLu Art at http://instagram.com/luluartstore and I’m there as well, http://instagram.com/purplesaltcr8 Pop by and say ‘hi’!
Hello! It’s Robyn with you today sharing an art journal page using some brand new Dina Wakley stamps. I tend to love anything insect themed, so when these cute stamps came in they were in my hands so fast! I love the size of the images – perfect for cards, tags or art journaling. This page comes together quite quickly once the butterflies are stamped, coloured and trimmed – I love how the sparkly butterflies gently pop out of the page. You can easily substitute with different colours or maybe use a different type of background all together!

Don’t forget that as designers we love sharing our knowledge of products sold in the store, so if there is something you would like to know how to use or a technique that you would love to learn – drop us a line and we will see what we can do. Personally, I love a challenge and am always happy to play with something new, in the interests of education of course! (really I just like to buy ‘new’ products)
I must confess I am a little bit of a memory keeper. As I mentioned in my last dt blog post, our family took a holiday to beautiful Cairns in Queensland, Australia. One of my fondest memories was entering into the rainforest and discovering one of Cairns many waterfalls. This waterfall was particularly good, coz you could swim in the cool fresh water in a lagoon type area with large rounded boulders. I sat there breathing it all in, watching my children laugh and swim…it was beautiful.
For this project, I present to you a journal entry on a page that I can place in my home-made journal that we made at the very start of my blog posts with the Lulu Art design team. This is my last blog entry for the team and I am very grateful for the opportunity. For those that enjoy all the blog posts please keep on creating and enjoying time with art. Thanks also to the rest of the lovely team.
Today I’m creating an art journal piece using a technique for making textured paper which I learned from Gillian Cox. When I asked her permission to use the technique she was happy to share – I think that’s pretty awesome. As soon as I saw the paper created by the technique – which Gillian uses as layers in her mixed media art – it made me think of crumpled fabric and so this piece was born.
Once you’ve made the paper creating a dress is easy. You can either draw it (from your imagination or a reference), use transfer paper to copy the dress to your paper, or cut a dress out a magazine and use that as a template. Whatever your drawing skill level you’re going to come out with something that looks good. And you can use this paper & transfer/template for all kinds of other things.
Here’s the video (It’s short but hopefully sweet!):
Magazine picture of a dress for reference (if needed) – I like long dresses (folds & no legs!) and pictures with just one hand showing to make it easier to draw
It has turned blustery and cold in Brisbane this week – Winter is here at last, but my Instagram feed reassures me that it is Summertime elsewhere in the world! I’ve created a textured art journal page to share with you today that uses lots of lovely texture, found words and a bird or two.
Molding Paste is perfect for adding texture to a journal page – it goes on like butter or thick icing and a thin layer is light enough for a small journal. Check out how I created the texture using an old, plastic spoon.
My page also features found words which were cut from one of the free magazines which are abundant in my city. I find the non-specific, fashion and event style magazines are the best for a good variety of words. I started searching with no plan in mind after I had the basic texture and trees done and just let the words jump out at me. Soon enough I had a theme and a title! It is a fun way of creating journaling.
Hello fellow art fans, I hope you’re all getting your supplies hoarded for a winter of creating. I really love the winter for holing up in my study and making lots of art and craft.
For my post today I’m going to take you through how I make my layered, translucent, mixed media backgrounds.
When I first started art journaling I really struggled with making a background that had enough interest but didn’t take away from the subject and writing. Over time (and a lot of awful backgrounds!) I worked out a process that allows me to create something with layers, white space, muted colours, texture and translucency – all the things I love. If you like these things too I hope you’ll take the time to watch my video below.
Here are some points to think about as you create your background:
Think about where you’re going to put your subject and leave that bit white. Don’t be afraid of white – it makes all the other colours pop!
I like working with complimentary colours (brown & blue are opposite each other on the colour wheel) and tend to just use variations of the two I’ve picked.
Start with a water based layer on gesso (so it moves around) that will bleed up through the layers.
Do a couple of transparent layers (distress stain then washi tape) then a couple of opaque ones (acrylic then paper) then a couple more transparent (tissue paper then stencils/stamps)
Make it look messy.
Use gesso to pull all the different bits together and to tone things down at the end if anything is standing out too much.
