Dreamin’ of Spring-Art Journal Page

Hiya! Idiana here from Idiana’s Creations. Today I am sharing with you this simple and fun art journal page.

I started on a black background then layered with paint and gesso. I had these pre-cut flower shapes on white cardstock (you can make these yourself and cut out by hand) and painted with watercolours.
wp-image-1173127827jpg.jpg

wp-image-1114752133jpg.jpg

Then the fun part was using a fine line applicator with Dylusions white paint and scribbling. I find that adding a little water in the bottle helps the paint flow out smoother.

Recycled Packaging Art Journal Page

Hi Lulu Art Fans!  Kate (aka Sparkle Tart) here with you on the blog today with a cool idea for using some of that gorgeous packaging you get on your art supplies!  Today I’m going to let loose my slightly WEIRD side!  I hope I’m not alone when I buy a new art supply and spend a minute or two marvelling over the beautiful packaging.  I mean that’s not so weird right – they MAKE the packaging to be attractive, eye-catching and pretty so we want to buy the product!  Well, my latest purchase of a Black Dylusions art journal from Ranger had packaging just too pretty to throw away – so I decided to incorporate it into my journal as the very first page.

recycled-packaging-page-1b-sm

BASIC TECHNIQUE

Cut packaging into a variety of interesting shapes and glue onto your pages using Matte Gel Medium.

dylusions-recycled-packaging-page-1a

Use a Dylusions stencil (I picked patterns that were similar to the images in the packaging, and the shapes I cut out) and Black Gesso to break up the shapes of the packaging by adding stencilled images over both the packaging and the background.  Then get in there with the paint left on the brush and really scruff up those edges!!

dylusions-recycled-packaging-page-2a

Add texture using Light Molding Paste and stencils, you can use the same ones you used before or introduce new images.  You are again aiming to break up the background and blur the line between the collage papers and the journal page.  Also smear a little of the paste around on the page to create interesting texture and a bit of shape to the page.

dylusions-recycled-packaging-page-3a

Add colour to the Stencilled shapes using acrylic paints (Golden and Dina Wakley) – choose colours that compliment, though stand-out, against the background – make sure there is some variety in the paint you use, for maximum interest.   Try adding one colour while another is still wet, for interesting blends and then let other colours dry between layers for a different look.  Also flick a little of each colour over the background to scruff up that clean black paper.

dylusions-recycled-packaging-page-8a

Add some of the  Gansai Tambi metallic paints onto and around the textured elements.

dylusions-recycled-packaging-page-4a

Add some of the art alchemy paints to both the images, the texture and around the patterns and make sure whatever you do on one side you add a little to the other side as well.  Look at the amazing shimmer from the Art Alchemy paint – super gorgeous.

dylusions-recycled-packaging-page-7a
Once all the paint is dry, highlight some of the texture on the page using a gold wax paste and add some white paint pen and embellishments to really make the design pop.   Leave some of the paint pen as white lines and use your fingers to blend other sections into the background.

recycled-packaging-page-7a-sm

And your finished pages might look something like this, a blend of packaging and new texture, metallic and bright painted elements.  If I hadn’t told you I was using packaging you would never guess!

Here are a few close-ups so you can see the yummy details.

Colour Me Positive

Colour Me Positive – Week 15

CMP_Banner_Wk15

Today’s quote is all about being HAPPY.

Life can sometimes seem like a quest to achieve happiness. Many of us say “When I find my soul mate, then I’ll be happy” or “When I lose that excess weight” or “When I get that dream job”. But woven in those thoughts is the sense of being “less than” you want to be which therefore makes you less happy than you were before.

It’s not the conditions of our lives that make us happy (although that can help of course) but the way we relate to ourselves and our lives that provide the happiness. It’s the way we walk through life.

Start by smiling more, doing things you enjoy, laughing, doing things that you know already make you happy. Instead of continuously seeking happiness, why not just start being happy now!

Our Feature Artist – Steve Dodson

Today we have something a little different. Steve is an artist in his own field which is Hypnosis.  Make sure you read on till the end to see Steve’s giveaway which is a helpful tool for us all.

SteveDodsonNH

Tell us a bit about yourself ..

My passion is helping others achieve their dreams using hypnosis and the creative power of subconscious mind.

Each and every one of us have the potential to be whatever we want to be and do whatever we want to do. The majority of road blocks to success are found in our unconscious behaviours and beliefs. These mental patterns make or break us. Fortunately the creative nature of the mind can be accessed during the hypnotic state, where it’s possible to develop more empowering beliefs and supportive behaviours.

I am driven by the statement, “You’ll just have to learn to live with it!” Because in so many cases, you don’t. The potential of the human mind is incredible and when the creative aspects are stimulated appropriately, powerful personal change can occur.

What is your favourite quote?

“There is no path to happiness … Happiness is the path” ~ Buddha

Colour Me Positive – Week 12

CMP_Banner_Wk12

This week is all about EXPANDING yourself. How will you know if you can achieve that goal if you don’t give it a try. I personally love the planning stage of any new project. Making notes and lists and planning it all out. But then I find the hardest part for me is taking the first step! Is this you too?

It’s so important to take that next step before the fear sets in and we give up because we fear failure. Then take another small step, then another. You’ll never know if it will be a success unless you give it a try. Expand your wings now, see how far you can fly!

Tell us a bit about yourself ..

I was born in Sydney, Australia and spent most of my childhood there. Life in Sydney was amazing and I grew up doing Art in the Aussie sunshine! You could usually find me in the garden painting, drawing or reading. We had the opportunity to travel overseas often and this inspired me greatly. I have a deep love of adventure and travel! My father was transferred back to the States in my Junior year so I ended up finishing high school in Connecticut. Being six feet tall and having an Australian accent, it was tough to fit in but I found my home in the AP Art room and owe so much to my amazing Art Teacher! After graduating, I went on to attend the Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida and received a BFA in Illustration.

After living in several cities, I found my home in beautiful, Portland, Oregon. My husband, Chris and I have been here for 13 years now and it has been the perfect environment in which to grow our family. We have two daughters, Grace and Claire and two cats.

Since graduating, I’ve had many different jobs – interior designer, skin care creator and antique shop owner but none of these quite fit. Now, as a full time artist and teacher I have found my true place. I have come home to Art and I’m here to stay! 🙂

What inspires you?

Many things inspire me but my top three would be bookstores, Pinterest and learning. I adore bookstores! I often go visit them when I’m looking for inspiration. Beautiful magazines, poetry and stories trigger visuals for me and spark ideas. Pinterest is just plain delicious! A visual feast for any creative and a wonderful way to build boards around a theme or painting idea. I adore learning! I’m a forever student of art and life and I take many online classes from other artists. You can never learn too much and this attitude helps keep my mind fresh and open to techniques, styles and new ways of seeing things.

Colour Me Positive

Colour Me Positive – Week 8

CMP_Banner_Wk8

Today’s quote is all about being FEARLESS. A lot of the time fear and perfectionism go hand in hand. Especially when it comes to our  creativity. The fear of doing something well (or perfectly) can at times stop you from doing that thing at all. Your fear extorts joy and potential happiness from your life by threatening you with what might happen! You deserve to live fearless and free. My strategy is to just start and see where it takes me.

Our extra (optional) journal prompt is:

Cut out words to use on your page.

If you need a reminder how the challenge works go have another look at the Intro page.

This week we have an example page by Monika Dabrowska-Ejmont from Green Kitten Art:

Our feature artist this week – Pamela Jennion

Pamela is one of our lovely local artists who will be teaching in our studio shortly (see below for details on her class). You may have seen some of Pam’s challenge pages as she has been playing alongside us and creating some beautiful pages.

CMP_Wk8_Pam

Tell us a bit about yourself …

During my early painting life I mostly used acrylics, I decided I needed to do something new. So I had a few lessons from an artist who showed me the basics of watercolour. I fell in love with the freedom of playing with the paints and the water. I have painted this way ever since. My friends were loving my paintings and a few asked me to show them how to paint. Before I knew it Sunshine Coast Art Classes was born and I haven’t looked back (over 20 years).

I designed a program that could teach the BEGINNER artist to paint WATERCOLOUR in just ONE, FUN & EASY lesson.

My compositions are quite simplistic and whimsical. I love joyous colour and hope that the paintings take the viewer to a HAPPY PLACE. I was inspired early on by Ken Done a famous Australian artist. I loved his simple, bright, happy style and so I only use bright, happy colours too. My own art style has recently changed and I am now painting what’s really in my heart. By adding inspirational verse & collage, my paintings have taken on extra new meaning by helping them to tell a story. My desire when people look at my paintings that they feel uplifted and encouraged.

I decided to take the challenge of Colour me positive 2016 and have been so inspired by all the amazing art works that have graced the site. I love receiving the theme for the week and then seeing my painting evolve.

What is your favourite inspirational quote?

My favourite quote is …”Face your fears and your fears will go.

I have applied this verse to many areas of my life and It has helped get through some really tough times. It has also helped me grow as an artist. By learning to take risks and be willing to think outside the square. I have become a ‘happy artist’.

One day I saw a lady standing in front of one of my paintings that I was using to advertise one of my workshops. She stood there just gazing at it. And after a while she turned to me and said ‘ Oh I could never do that’ and with that she walked away. I felt so sad for her, because I believe that she allowed her fear of failure to rob her of a beautiful experience.

What inspires you?

Being an art tutor for more than 20 years has become my greatest joy. I just love inspiring the beginner artist and helping them to find the freedom in using the ‘wet on wet watercolour technique’. I believe that Art should be a joyous experience, a place where we can go to escape the storms of life or just to create a painting to brighten up our home.

MissSerenity

Where can we find you?

If you live within driving distance to the Sunshine Coast, Qld I would love to invite you to my upcoming workshop ‘Miss Serenity’ held at the Lulu Art studio.
