Today I am so excited to be sharing with you the first in a series of artist interviews. I am so pleased to introduce you to the lovely Jamie Dougherty. Jamie’s Bloom Girls have become a signature of hers and she teaches Bloom Girl workshops internationally and online.
Jamie is launching a new (year long) class on 1st July. You can sign up here.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.
I’m a self taught artist who lives in Southern California with my husband and two amazing kids. I am a mixed media artist who loves to try anything and everything I possibly can. I teach workshops that are based off of my “Bloom Girls” a form of portrait art I’ve created over the past few years. I also have a product collection with Prima Marketing based off of my Bloom Girl designs.
How/when did you get interested in art?
I’ve loved art since a young age. I was always surrounded by creative people so it helped guide that passion. I had a teacher in high school that really encourage my love for art and gave me the swift kick I needed to believe in my self and work.
Can you remember one of the first things you drew/painted?
Horses … Being a country girl, horses were my obsession, but isn’t it every little girls?
What’s your favourite piece of work that you have created?
That is a very hard one. I have so many favorites, but if I had to pick one it would have to be a pencil drawing I recently did. It reflects who I am in my art, my nature, and my passions.
Do you have a favourite artist?
My favorite artist would have to be Leonardo Da Vinci. His style, work with color, and his inventive mind is something I’d love to achieve. Just a sliver of his talent would be unbelievable.
What’s the best thing about being an artist?
I’m my own boss. For the most part I don’t have someone telling me what I can or can’t create. Of course when you have a custom art piece or product design, you have limits but limits are so much better than sitting behind a desk crunching numbers. Who was a bookkeeper for twelve years? This girl right here and I’ll never go back lol.
Do you like to have music playing while you create and if so, what kind of music do you listen to that inspires you?
I am more of a TV on in the background kind of person. It could be a Friends episode I’ve watched for the thousandth time, or a chick flick that I can laugh at every so often.
What is your favourite thing that you often include in your work?
Faces and flowers are for sure my thing. They started off as doodles then became a passion. My daughter started my path to drawing Bloom Girls, you could call her my muse.
What are you doing when you’re not creating?
I love spending time with my family … They are my highest priority.
If I’m not creating art and the family is fast asleep and my creative brain is still running, I also like to write. I have three books currently in print and have a couple more in the works. I have a brain that never shuts off.
What are your favourite products to use?
My favorite product to use would have to be watercolor pencils. I love the watercolor look with the control of a pencil, best of both worlds.
Do you have any tips or inspiring words to share?
Never let others determine your worth as a person or an artist. It has taken me a long time to understand this and I won’t lie, I still struggle. Art is meant to be a personal experience we then share with the world but remember you’ll never appeal to everyone, you only have to make YOU happy.
Where we can view your work?
Do you have any upcoming online classes where we can enjoy learning from you?
I have an online workshop beginning July 1st. “Blooming Through The Seasons” This is a year long workshop where you will receive a video tutorial once a month that will show you how to draw, paint, and/or create your own Bloom Girls. All levels are welcome, I provide templates for those who may not feel comfortable with drawing so there is no drawing experience needed.
Each month you will also learn how to create a new flower, all while using a variety on mixed media supplies that most of us have hiding in our rooms.
Come and join us in finding your own inner Bloom Girl. More information can be found at the link below.
Thank you so much Jamie for sharing your answers with us! I’ve just signed up to the course above and can’t wait to start when it launches in a few days time! I hope a few of you might join me! Also keep an eye out for Jamie’s new (Prima) bloom girl stamps and stencils which will be in our store sometime in July.
