Colour Me Positive – Week 12

Welcome to week 12.

tulips-1477285_960_720

Did you know that some things you do today, may have an effect that will not be visible until years later? The first thing that comes to mind is raising children.

The seeds of today are your children. What you teach them, what values you instil in them, etc.

The flowers of tomorrow are your children as adults. What happens in the life of a child may influence their development in some way, shape or form, but it’s not until they grow up and become adults do we truly see the people they have become.

There are many other examples for this quote. What comes to mind for you?

This week I challenge you to start your journal pages off with collage of flowers. Why not try using a bright happy colour?

You can see Dani Chaote’s take on this quote in her free mixed media tutorial here.

If you have any suggestions on how you would like to see this challenge develop, please don’t hesitate to let me know either by commenting on this post or emailing me at admin@luluart.com.au.

For those of you who would like daily or alternative prompts, I have prepared a Daily Journal Prompt List. You can find it in the Facebook Group under Files.

Artist Interview with Dani Choate

design-team-2017Today it is my pleasure to introduce the next Lulu Art Design Team Member for 2017.

Introducing Dani Choate from Pyglet Whispers. Dani is known for her beautiful mixed media artwork, particularly her cute whimsical girls.

I asked Dani to tell me about herself and asked her a few questions over a virtual coffee.

Dani Choate is a mixed media artist, designer and art journaler form Sydney. After studying Graphic Design in the early 90s she spent the next 12 years immersed in the Natural Health and Alternative Therapies industries. When her children were small she was inspired once again to return to art making. These were adventures in soft toy design, zine editions, lino & gocco printing, ATC & ACEOs, book page line art and a hobby turn at children’s fabric design.

Her current work is most often whimsical, feminine and full of colour & pattern. She displays a playful, childlike quality within each of her pieces.

face-3_resized

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.

I predominantly spend my time being a mum to my 3 young girls…7, 10 & 13. I am a mixed media artist, designer and illustrator. I am also a collector and source and sell all kinds of vintage and eclectic bits and pieces, not only online but also from a space that I have at a vintage emporium in Sydney’s Alexandria. Arting is my release, my time. The moments I can be most, myself.

How/when did you get interested in art?

I think I have always been interested in ‘making things’ and creating. I cannot remember a time that it wasn’t just a natural part of how I functioned.

colour-burst-c_wm_resized

Can you remember one of the first things you drew or painted?

Aside from preschool painting and creating and at home as a child with my mum, a teacher…. I do remember a particular time when I was about 8 or 9 when I saw a stranger painting a seascape at the beach. I remember being particularly transfixed by what he was doing. I stood behind him and watched for ages until at some point he turned and offered me a small canvas board and a paint brush. He set me up next to him and began to show me step by step how to paint the water to get the foam at the top of each wave and how to paint the clouds to get a little shadow on each fold. I remember thinking it was a bit like magic!! Seriously…I must have painted that particular image a thousand times over the next few years, practicing and perfecting what I had learned from him. I was not very good at it…but I was hooked at trying to be!

What is your favourite piece of work you have created?

Recent favourites…

Do you have a favourite artist?

So many favourites… the list is really never ending. Currently I am inspired by artists like Estee McLeod, Maria Pace-Wynters, Lizanne Tran, Helmtrud Kraienhorst, Hanna Ekegren, Tina Berning, Kyoko Uematsu. Cori Dantini, Gustavo Aimar, Claire Desjardin… do I have to stop??

oppurtunity-c_wm_resizedWhat is the best thing about being an artist?

Exploration, possibilities, expression, immersiveness, stillness, clarity – the space it draws you into.

Do you like to have music playing while you create and if so what kind of music do you listen to that inspires you?

I have current favourites but they are always changing… at the moment I am listening to a lot of  Mansionair, Rufus, Palmistry and Christine & the Queens .

What is your favourite thing that you often include in your work?

Faces, flowers, pattern and colour.

pygletwhispers-danichoate-birds_resized

What are you doing when you are not creating?

Adulting, taxiing family members and scrambling to make a living… would much rather be arting.

PhotoEditor-1488587974529_wm_resized.jpg

What are your favourite products to use

White sharpie, acrylics, posca pens, caran d’ache neocolour II, collage & spray paint (when I get a chance)

Do you have any tips or inspiring words to share?

pygletwhispers-danichoate-fish_resized

As a younger person I was encouraged to approach the world from a perfectionist standpoint. I grew up in a family where art and art making was given little importance and doing only what you were good at was valued over doing what you loved.

In my experience, this perfectionist standpoint makes it very difficult to ever begin the process of art making. If you begin to create something, with an attachment to a specific outcome, you give yourself  no room for error, no room for exploration, no room for mistakes. Yet, mistakes are important, mistakes are our teachers, mistakes are in fact, vital. Mistakes allow you to observe yourself and your responses and to explore your capabilities. Mistakes give you the gift of being able to discover your new ‘edges’ and have faith that abilities that you didn’t even know yet existed will always be ENOUGH. Embrace the mistakes that you may make within your art. They are the teachers that we can rely upon to guide us along our way.

Where can we view your work?

Colour Me Positive – Week 11

Welcome to week 11. This week is about RECOGNISING THE BEAUTY IN YOURSELF.

beautiful-1868656__340

How easy is it to see the beauty in others before we see it in ourselves? Why is it that we focus on the things we’d like to change about ourselves and forget about our beautiful qualities? When was the last time you thought about all the wonderful qualities that make up the beautiful person looking back at you in the mirror……yes, that would be YOU.

This week I challenge you to write down 10 beautiful and/or positive qualities that make up you. Spend 5 minutes, no less on this. Don’t short-change yourself. This can be a very difficult task, but very rewarding. Choose one to incorporate this in this weeks journal page.

If you have any suggestions on how you would like to see this challenge develop, please don’t hesitate to let me know either by commenting on this post or emailing me at admin@luluart.com.au.

Artist Interview with Anne Cahill

design-team-2017

Today it is my pleasure to introduce the next Lulu Art Design Team Member for 2017.

Introducing Anne Cahill from Must Love Paint. Anne is known for her stunning folk art style. You’ll see what I mean. She was also part of the Lulu Art Design Team of 2013 and if I remember correctly, she created the first ever free tutorial for Lulu Art. You can view it here at Catching Stars.

I asked Anne to tell me about herself and asked her a few questions over a virtual coffee.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.anne-profilepic

I have owned a folk art and decorative painting studio in Hervey Bay where I taught numerous classes each week. I really enjoyed teaching classes and met the most amazing people. I have also been fortunate enough to be published numerous times in Handmade and Folk Art and Decorative painting magazines. Back then I was creating mainly decorative timber pieces which progressed into canvases and then journaling. All of which has taken a back seat as our Electrical and Data Contracting business continued to grow and I was needed to help run and organised the staff of which today we have a team of 15 so there is lots to co-ordinate. Not the industry I ever imagined myself in but have found the past 20 years very rewarding. On the weekends you can find me in my art room, it is bright and airy and it is a place I retreat to.

Angel Cats

How/when did you get interested in art?

I have always been interested in arts and crafts for as long as I can remember, something my parents had always encouraged. I became interested in painting when my daughter and mother bought a cow head cookie jar from the flee market for my Mother’s Day gift. We later went back to the stall and there I saw a beautiful teddy bear and I just wanted to learn how to paint one myself. From there my love of painting and drawing began and my other crafts have taken a back seat.

Angels Among Us

Can you remember one of the first things you drew/painted?

Teddy Bears, I adore drawing and painting them, I have a few stuffed ones which I keep tucked away in art room who are only too happy to pose for a painting or two.

Thread bear

What’s your favourite piece of work that you have created?

That is one tough question, my house if full of canvases and timber pieces I have created over the years. They are all precious to me and remind me of my painting journey.

The Boys

Do you have a favourite artist?

Current artists in the style of which I enjoy today, would be Jane Davenport, Tamara Laporte and Jamie Dougherty, all are equally my favourite and I have taken classes with them.

Bear Heads

What’s the best thing about being an artist?

Connecting and sharing with other like-minded people who get excited about a simple tube of paint or the latest coloured pencils.

Butterfly Garden

Do you like to have music playing while you create and if so, what kind of music do you listen to that inspires you?

We live on an acre block near the beach, on a still day you can hear the waves crash on the beach and there are many birds that sing through day so I prefer to sit and listen to natures music. It helps me clear my mind of my busy work day.

Everybody has a story

What is your favourite thing that you often include in your work?

My work can be varied but currently I am enjoying drawing faces, and the colour blue often pops in.

Few Pieces

What are you doing when you’re not creating?

Besides work, I enjoy cooking, camping and watching movies.

Gold Fish

What are your favourite products to use?

My favourite medium would be acrylic paint, I have a variety of brands but love the matt ones most of all. Recently I have started to enjoy incorporating colour pencils on top of the paint. I find the process of adding the shades and highlight with pencils rather relaxing.

IMG_4147

Do you have any tips or inspiring words to share?

Creating is so rewarding, it need not be expensive to get started as you will be amazed at what you have already have that you can use. But beware…….once you start you will be addicted for life and the friendships that are out there waiting to connect with you are endless.

Colour Me Positive – Week 10

Welcome to week 10. This week is about APPRECIATING WHAT YOU HAVE.

Grateful

Imagine a world where we all focused on everything that we were grateful for. How different would the world be? Have you ever tried the following: After waking in the morning, think of 3 things you are grateful for before getting out of bed and starting your day. Starting the day off with a grateful heart can change your whole day. I dare you to try this. Not for a day, but for a week, at least. Go on. See what it does for you and those around you.

This week I challenge you to write down 10 things you are grateful for. Try to incorporate this in this weeks journal page.

Colour Me Positive – Week 9

Welcome to week 9. This week is about LAUGHTER.

agoodlaugh

Did you know that while you are in the process of laughing, all your worries during that moment are no longer there?  It is not possible to laugh and worry at the same time.

“Laughter is clinically proven to have a powerful and positive effect on physical, emotional and social health and wellbeing.  It heals and renews the human body and mind, and nothing works faster or more dependably to bring the mind and body back into balance.

Laughter is clinically proven to:

  1. Boost the immune system. Laughing improves the body’s natural defense mechanism by increasing the amount of immunoglobulin’s and T cell’s in the body.
  2. Reduce the risk of heart disease. Laughing expands the inner walls of the arteries which increases the ability of blood to flow around the body, and, this positive effect lasts for up to 45 minutes after the laughter has stopped.
  3. Decrease stress. Laughing instantly reduces the levels of stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline) and dopamine, and increases the production of serotonin and endorphins which reduce effects of stress.
  4. Can assist as a mild anti-depressant. Laughter boosts the production of serotonin, a natural anti-depressant.  Laughter also works as an effective distraction from things that cause anxiety and anger.
  5. Reduce blood pressure. When you laugh, the blood flow increases, circulation improves and your blood pressure rises.  When you stop laughing, your blood pressure drops back to its baseline. This relaxing effect helps to lower your baseline blood pressure.
  6. Is a natural painkiller. There are a number of studies which validate the pain relieving effects of laughter.  Studies show that watching comedy films assists both children and adults to tolerate pain more easily.
  7. Massage the abdominal organs. Belly laughing effectively ‘massages’ the abdominal organs.  The blood flow to these organs is increased and their functioning is improved.
  8. Help keep diabetes under control. A recent study showed that people who watched a funny video after meal had lower blood sugar levels than those who watched a serious film.  It could be that laughter affects the neuroendocrine system, which monitors the body´s glucose levels, or it may be the effect of energy used by the stomach muscles.
  9. Make you look younger. As many as 15 facial muscles work together to help you smile and laugh. This increases the blood flow around the face, bringing the circulation into even the smallest of capillaries which, in turn, helps to make you look younger and healthier.
  10. Re-energize the mind and body. Laughing forces air out of lungs, and causes us to take deep inward breaths, increasing the flow of oxygen right around the body.
  11. Build resilience. The ability to laugh, or at least smile, when times get tough, is the best way to reduce stress and anxiety.  While a little stress actually helps to motivate us into action and to focus on the problem, laughter helps us to focus on the solution and achieve more productive outcomes.
  12. Aid with sleep. Having a good laugh prior to sleep reduces stress and anxiety, promoting deep, restful sleep. Laughter also provides a mild aerobic workout, which, not only  energizes you in the short term, but also helps you to sleep better.
  13. Bond us to others. Laughter causes the release of oxytocin.  Often called the empathy hormone, oxytocin helps bond individuals and groups together.  A little laughter is great for building great teams, be they in the community or at work.
  14. Is contagious. Laughing not only lifts our spirits but also the spirit of those around us.  Happy people lift the spirit of those around them.  Remember, a smile or laugh shared is a smile or laugh doubled.”

Above text from www.letslaugh.com.au

This week I challenge you to find the funniest joke you can find or the funniest picture and show someone. Spread the laughter.
