Artist Interview – Rochelle Melville

design-team-2017

Today it is my pleasure to introduce the next Lulu Art Design Team Member for 2017.

Introducing Rochelle Melville from Rockmelon Recycled. Rochelle is known for her use of bright beautiful colours in her gorgeous artwork. You’ll see what I mean. She was also part of the Lulu Art Design Team of 2016.

I asked Rochelle to tell me about herself and asked her a few questions over a virtual coffee.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do. img_0752-copy

I am immersed full time in intentional creativity. I am in my final tern of study to become an art therapist, plus I design and make fine wood creations for a woodwork business with my husband called Lathe & Chisel. I also teach art classes specialising in teaching art journaling for health and healing (no art experience needed). I am about to self publish my first book on getting through the difficult seasons in life too, so it will be a busy year.

How/When did I get interested in art?

Creating has always been my thing. Even as a child I was colouring, drawing, making stuff out of cereal boxes, sewing my teddy bear’s outfits and painting. I wanted to study fine art straight out of high school, but instead I chose to ignore my heart (artist can’t make a living blah, blah, blah, blah) and study something ‘sensible’.

Can you remember one of the first things you drew or painted?
I remember on my very first day of school we glued red crepe paper balls into a picture of an apple. Interestingly, it’s my only memory from that first day of school.

What’s you favourite piece of work that you have created?
The piece I am working on now. I just fall in love with every piece I make.

Do you have a favourite Artist?
No,  but I have been strongly influenced by Christy Tomlinson’s techniques and products.

What’s the best thing about being an artist?
Everything. It’s a lifestyle and a life calling. It is a heart and soul connection to seeing beauty, inspiration and encouragement all around and sharing those moments with the world through free artistic expression.

Do you like to have music playing while you create and if so, what kind of music do you to that inspires you?

On the rare opportunities that I am creating in an empty house, I do put music on, but I’m more likely to listen to dialogue on a favourite DVD while I create.

What is your favourite thing that you often include in your work?

A tree, bird, butterfly or dragonfly, the words ‘hope’, ‘beautiful’ or ‘faith’. I can’t seem to get away from the colour pink. Even though it’s not my favourite colour, I love creating with it. I also love to incorporate secret symbols, words or messages in custom artworks.

What do I do when not creating?

Sleeping…lol.

What are your favourite products to use?

Inks sprays and paint or salvaged and reclaimed timber.

Do you have any tips or inspiring words to share?

Grab your fears and preconceived ideas of what art is and should be, screw them up into a ball and toss them in the bin. Then set fire to it and toast marshmallow. The best way to silence the inner critic is to have fun without any judgement (good or bad, just focus on allowing things to flow). Simply create and create and create.
