Colour Me Positive

Colour Me Positive – Week 18

Today’s quote is about the importance of art in HEALING. Our feature artist this week, Jade Herriman, is an art therapist and believes strongly in the power that art can have on our lives.  Make sure you read all about Jade below.

How does art heal? Scientific studies tell us that art heals by changing a person’s physiology and attitude. The body’s physiology changes from one of stress to one of deep relaxation, from one of fear to one of creativity and inspiration. Art puts a person in a different brain wave pattern and affects every cell in the body instantly to create a healing physiology that changes the immune system and blood flow to all the organs. Art and Music also immediately change a person’s perceptions of their world. They change attitude, emotional state, and pain perception. They create hope and positivity and they help people cope with difficulties. They transform a person’s outlook and way of being in the world.

They are all some very good reasons why we should make art a priority in our lives!!

Our extra (optional) journal prompt is:

Use a heart (or many hearts) somewhere on your page.

If you need a reminder how the challenge works go have another look at the Intro page.

This weeks inspiration:

Art makes my heart sing and blocks out the pressures and negative voices in my head!

Our Feature Artist – Jade Herriman

Tell us a little bit about yourself …

I’m Jade, a mixed media artist, art therapist and life coach based in the Inner West of Sydney. I love using art therapy and coaching to help people see themselves and their situations in new ways, and helping others create, connect and work towards their dreams.

What is your favourite quote?

“Art opens the closets, airs out the cellars and attics. It brings healing.” – Julia Cameron

What inspires you?

I am totally inspired by patterns and texture – rusty metal, peeling paint, vintage tiles with juicy gloss glazes, the patterns of shadows in the late afternoon elongated down a street – as well as the sheer beauty and over the top abundance of nature. I love taking photos of flowers and appreciating the multitudes of blooms dotted around my neighbourhood at any given time.

Collaboration inspires me, I love teaching and facilitating groups, and seeing other people ‘come out of their shell’ creatively and emotionally. I enjoy working on pieces with other people and am engrossed in letter journal making lately as a vehicle for my collaborative art making with art friends from around the world.

I identify as being what Barbara Sher calls a ‘scanner’ – someone with a large number of multiple interests… so basically I find the whole world pretty inspiring. My days are awash with ideas and sensory inputs that I use in my art-making but also in designing programs for clients, workshops, blog posts, community art projects and other creative outputs.

Where can we find you?

IMG_3330Week 18 Prize:

For this week’s challenge prize Jade has donated a lovely pack of 5 greeting cards and envelopes. We will draw a random name on Friday 13th May from those who have uploaded into the Week 18 folder by that date. So you have two weeks to complete the challenge.

Entry is open to everyone who participates, no matter where in the world you are. It’s not a game of skill, you won’t be judged on your artwork. It will be a random draw. So have fun, upload your photo and you may get a lovely bonus!

Wk16_WinnerWeek 16 Draw:

Now it’s time to draw a name from the photos loaded up into the Week 16 photo album. Today’s lucky winner is Chernita Hick. Congratulations Chernita! Here is the page that Chernita created about how ART can help us.

Make sure you check out the photos in the Facebook albums. There is some amazing work in there. What a great place for inspiration. Make sure you leave a few comments while you are there.

Please remember:

It’s ok to skip a week and jump in wherever you can. Don’t feel pressured if life gets busy!

Don’t compare yourself to others. We’re all in different stages of our art journey. You’re an artist and you’re amazing no matter what level you’re at. Just have fun and keep going.

Please PM or email me if you have an urgent question as I’m more likely to see it. The facebook page moves so fast it’s so easy to miss comments.

Have fun, be happy and support one another!
