Colour Me Positive – Week 18

CMP_Banner_Wk18

Today’s quote is about the importance of art in HEALING. Our feature artist this week, Jade Herriman, is an art therapist and believes strongly in the power that art can have on our lives.  Make sure you read all about Jade below.

How does art heal? Scientific studies tell us that art heals by changing a person’s physiology and attitude. The body’s physiology changes from one of stress to one of deep relaxation, from one of fear to one of creativity and inspiration. Art puts a person in a different brain wave pattern and affects every cell in the body instantly to create a healing physiology that changes the immune system and blood flow to all the organs. Art and Music also immediately change a person’s perceptions of their world. They change attitude, emotional state, and pain perception. They create hope and positivity and they help people cope with difficulties. They transform a person’s outlook and way of being in the world.

They are all some very good reasons why we should make art a priority in our lives!!

Tell us a little bit about yourself …

I’m Jade, a mixed media artist, art therapist and life coach based in the Inner West of Sydney. I love using art therapy and coaching to help people see themselves and their situations in new ways, and helping others create, connect and work towards their dreams.

What is your favourite quote?

“Art opens the closets, airs out the cellars and attics. It brings healing.” – Julia Cameron

What inspires you?

I am totally inspired by patterns and texture – rusty metal, peeling paint, vintage tiles with juicy gloss glazes, the patterns of shadows in the late afternoon elongated down a street – as well as the sheer beauty and over the top abundance of nature. I love taking photos of flowers and appreciating the multitudes of blooms dotted around my neighbourhood at any given time.

Collaboration inspires me, I love teaching and facilitating groups, and seeing other people ‘come out of their shell’ creatively and emotionally. I enjoy working on pieces with other people and am engrossed in letter journal making lately as a vehicle for my collaborative art making with art friends from around the world.

I identify as being what Barbara Sher calls a ‘scanner’ – someone with a large number of multiple interests… so basically I find the whole world pretty inspiring. My days are awash with ideas and sensory inputs that I use in my art-making but also in designing programs for clients, workshops, blog posts, community art projects and other creative outputs.

Our Feature Artist – Denise Daffara

Denise_Collage.jpg

Tell us a little bit about yourself …

I have been painting for 15+ years, and have been into creativity all of my life. Hobbies include sewing, repurposing something to make it something else, I’ve made a few pinafore type dresses out of men’s shirts. I love tea and make time for that every single day.

Online classes first came into my life in 2011 via Dream Boogie with SARK, I have been loving them ever since. I was a student of them for several years and now I make classes and eCourses to share as well. Meeting artful Souls from around the world is an absolute delight. I’ve attended a few workshops that have changed my life; Bloom True in Ubud with Flora Bowley taught me a lot about holding space for students – Flora did this very powerfully. Color of Woman with Shiloh Sophia, taught me a lot about the healing power of intentional creativity and meeting the Muse.

A powerful life changing experience was in January this year (2016) being with my dear Mum in NZ as she transitioned from this life to beyond, my newest paintings have dramatically changed from what I used to paint – from figurative to abstract, this has given me a very gentle and healing way for me to be with grief.

What is your favourite quote?

“Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive,
and it is only by this meeting, that a new world is born.” ~ Anais Nin.

What inspires you?

Colour and paints inspire me – even more so when I give up the need for something to be perfect and just do the work/play. Online classes inspire me, to try new ways too.

Honouring Love sharable 1

Denise’s newest eCourse offering is about being with grief or loss of many kinds, and using creativity to be with hard to feel feelings. Creating a smash book, and live video circle calls are part of the class. There are some unique inclusions to this eCourse including recordings of conversations Denise has with an empath/artist/healer about how she receives clear messages from some Souls of family members who have passed.

Colour Me Positive – Week 16

CMP_Banner_Wk16

Today’s quote is a favourite of our feature artist, Mary Beth Shaw. Make sure you scroll down and read all about this talented artist and author.

This quote is all about how ART can help us in so many ways.  We can use art as a form of therapy to work through our challenges. It is a wonderful way to express ourselves.  It can teach us how to think and improvise. It allows us to express unique thoughts while simultaneously sharing and connecting with others. It can help us to discover who we really are but at the same time allow us to completely immerse ourselves and be lost in the moment.

To me most of all, it simply feeds my soul.

Our extra (optional) journal prompt is:

Put a bird on your page somewhere.

This weeks inspiration:

This is a page in my art journal. The left side of this spread was inspired by an online lesson with the clever Joanne Sharpe but I had to add a peacock (of course!) so extended over to the right side with some more drawing. I used Dylusions inks for this layout, dipping a brush into the bottles and using them like watercolour.

Our Feature Artist – Mary Beth Shaw

Mary Beth is an artist, an author and the founder of Stencil Girl, a company that sells fabulous stencils designed by many creative artists.

MaryBethShaw.jpg

A little bit about Mary Beth …

Mary Beth Shaw worked in the insurance industry for 18 years before she quit her job in 2000 to re-ignite a childhood love of art. Since then she has spent all her waking hours exploring life as a painter working in mixed media.

She worked as a road gypsy for 5 years, exhibiting at outdoor art fairs and selling as many as 300 paintings in one very blurry year. She transitioned into being a workshop instructor and finds pleasure helping students find their own voice.

She is author of Flavor for Mixed Media and Stencil Girl, is a columnist for Somerset Studios Magazine and a Golden Artist Educator. She is the founder of StencilGirl Products, LLC. She has a tattoo of a shooting star on her right shoulder.

What is your favourite quote?

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” ~ Thomas Merton

What inspires you?

What doesn’t inspire me? I am interested in rust stains, the shape and texture of tree bark, the striations of sand when the wave washes out. Rocks inspire me, cobwebs, frost markings on the window and shadows. I am interested in Life. It never fails to inspire me, every day, every moment.

Colour Me Positive – Week 15

CMP_Banner_Wk15

Today’s quote is all about being HAPPY.

Life can sometimes seem like a quest to achieve happiness. Many of us say “When I find my soul mate, then I’ll be happy” or “When I lose that excess weight” or “When I get that dream job”. But woven in those thoughts is the sense of being “less than” you want to be which therefore makes you less happy than you were before.

It’s not the conditions of our lives that make us happy (although that can help of course) but the way we relate to ourselves and our lives that provide the happiness. It’s the way we walk through life.

Start by smiling more, doing things you enjoy, laughing, doing things that you know already make you happy. Instead of continuously seeking happiness, why not just start being happy now!

Our extra (optional) journal prompt is:

Use some drips or splatters on your page.

I was lucky enough to do a class with a very talented local lady called Jan Carlson from Jan Carlson Art.  I created this watercolour piece in her class and have used it here simply because flowers make me happy!!

Our Feature Artist – Steve Dodson

Today we have something a little different. Steve is an artist in his own field which is Hypnosis.  Make sure you read on till the end to see Steve’s giveaway which is a helpful tool for us all.

SteveDodsonNH

Tell us a bit about yourself ..

My passion is helping others achieve their dreams using hypnosis and the creative power of subconscious mind.

Each and every one of us have the potential to be whatever we want to be and do whatever we want to do. The majority of road blocks to success are found in our unconscious behaviours and beliefs. These mental patterns make or break us. Fortunately the creative nature of the mind can be accessed during the hypnotic state, where it’s possible to develop more empowering beliefs and supportive behaviours.

I am driven by the statement, “You’ll just have to learn to live with it!” Because in so many cases, you don’t. The potential of the human mind is incredible and when the creative aspects are stimulated appropriately, powerful personal change can occur.

What is your favourite quote?

“There is no path to happiness … Happiness is the path” ~ Buddha

What inspires you?

I am inspired by those who have the courage to follow their own path in life.

Mixed Media Art Tag with Kathryn Cruise

LuluArt profile picHello again

I trust you all had a fabulous Easter. I know I really enjoyed my time away from work and spending some quality time with my family.

I made a mixed media tag for this months project and really enjoyed working small for a change. Although, I have worked on tags before it has been a while. To me these are like doing a mini art journal page and as always there are no rules as to what you can and can’t do. I hope you enjoy watching my video and I would love to hear what you think and if I inspired you what did you do with that inspiration.

Last month I had one lovely lady share with me her Dylusions journal cover which she did after watching my video. It was really great to see what she did and I love that she shared it with me.

Have some messy fun 🙂
