I’ve watched many people participating in the Colour Me Positive Art Journaling Challenge comment that they don’t know how to get started, or they lack confidence so I thought I’d run a few tutorials on art journal basics. This first introduction to art journaling is using products I use on nearly every single page such as stencils, ink sprays and paint. Please know you don’t have to draw to art journal, I rarely do!
You can watch the video tutorial here:
Materials and Equipment List:
- Art Journal (I am using and recommend an A4 size)
- Scissors
- Paint: I used pink, white, Dina Wakley Turquoise, Dina Wakley Tangerine, Dyan Reavely fresh lime
- Stencils: I used – TCW Corn Flower 6×6 and Art is 6×6
- Stencil brush
- Paintbrush (anything)
- Dylusions Ink Sprays: After Midnight, Vibrant Turquoise, Crushed Grape, Funky Fushia, Squeezed Orange, Lemon Zest
- Black Gel pen: Signo
- Uni Posca pen: white
- Scrap paper to protect your work station (it can be very messy lol)
- Water spray bottle: try the Mini Mister spray bottles from Ranger
- Hair dryer
- Paper towel
- Paint palette (I use a white china side plate)
Hope this helps you get started art journaling but more importantly I hope you find art as much of a healing, comforting and quiet place as I do!
Beautiful spread. Would gesso on the page stop the bleed through of the Dylusions spray. Would it also alter the way the sprays develop on the page.

Hi Pam, Unfortunately the gesso would make the sprays act differently. They are not as wonderfully vibrant if sprayed on a gesso page. They work more like a watercolour. I find the better quality journal you use the less bleed you will get. ~ Lisa
