Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to a lovely friend of mine, Denise Daffara. Denise is a regular teacher out here at the Lulu Art studio and also teaches interstate and overseas. Now even more people can enjoy Denise’s wonderful lessons as she has just launched a terrific online course as well.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.
I’d say I’m an introvert who has an outgoing streak (Leo moon for those astrologically gifted) … so that enables me to be able to teach workshops.. and then I go home and hide out in my studio again. Just this month (Feb 2015) I launched my very first Ecourse, which took me ever so much courage and overcoming of self doubts and tech mountains traverse. But OH the JOY of having a circle of women gather to create and use the materials I have prepared for them.
How/when did you get interested in art?
I’d began painting in 1999 … after an 18 month period of grief and loss… a friend offered to teach me how to paint, my youngest daughter was in kindy so I said, yes please…. and went to lessons one day a week on a pretty regular basis for 4 years.
Can you remember one of the first things you drew/painted?
A Modigliani inspired Nude.
What’s your favourite piece of work that you have created?
This one from 2014 – I’m so smitten with it I made a little youtube video to ‘introduce’ myself to folks who were curious about me and my ecourse. http://youtu.be/GS1GdF0GP-4
Do you have a favourite artist?
Chagall … then Klimt … Matisse and Modigliani come to mind immediately.
What’s the best thing about being an artist?
When you have a connection with the creatiive spirit while painting and bliss out, ceasing to know what time it is and not caring either. (I would like to increase the frequency of this).
Do you like to have music playing while you create and if so, what kind of music do you listen to that inspires you?
I like kind of trance music, a bit of classical, some modern funky stuff Bonobo, Rising Appalachia, London Grammar, Gotye, Broods .. but honestly.. most often I listen to podcasts of various wise teachers, spiritual teachers, interviews.. inspirational types etc.
Women, teacups, chickens, daisy flowers.
What are you doing when you’re not creating?
I don’t understand the question. lol. .. no.. I’m almost always creating.. but when I do switch off.. the beach walking.. or laying on a banana lounge is a very favorite thing.
Do you have a fun story to share involving your artwork?
I learned how to make a version of a smashbook in mid 2013, at a teacher training workshop in USA, in my book I wrote about wanting to share my love of tea and art combined, some 18 months later I launched an ecourse, called Creativitea Time and part of it is teaching how to make those same incredible smashbooks.
What are your favourite products to use?
Golden fluid acrylics, Neocolor II water soluable crayons, stabillo woody pencil, fun stencils.
Do you have any tips or inspiring words to share?
Self acceptance is vital to a flourishing creative life. Also.. that inner critic you have.. has a polar opposite .. she’s your Muse/Wise Self.. the more you can nurture a strong connection to her, the stronger, wiser, wilder, more bodacious and fabulous your life will become. I absolutely believe this and have experienced it first hand.

I teach visionary painting workshops for women, my current inspiration is Essence of Gypsy.. you can join me here at Lulu Art in March 2015 .. Melbourne May 2015 or Brisbane Sept 2015. I love to sip tea and create with you.
